Unvaccinated account for over 90% COVID deaths in 2022: ICMR

Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), Dr Balram Bhargava, said that unvaccinated people in the country accounted for around 92% of COVID-19 deaths in 2022, as he cited data from the COVID vaccine tracker.

Among the people who were fully vaccinated, only 10.2% died due to COVID-19 and 91% of these fully vaccinated who succumbed to the disease had co-morbidities. Around 21.8% of the individuals who died were partially vaccinated and 83% were having co-morbidities. NITI Aayog Member (Health) Dr VK Paul stated that we are at present in a vaccine-protected low corona stage.

The case fatality rate (CFR) declined to 0.35% during the third wave, between January 4 and February 14 this year, from 1.29% during the second surge, from March 21 to July 14, 2021… (ET Healthworld – TNN, March 4, 2022)
